Early Oscar Predictions

We’re now halfway through the year, so I thought that I would give some of my early Oscar predictions for 2011.

Some contenders for Best Picture I think are Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, and I think JJ Abrams’s Super 8 has a chance of being nominated.

As for films that are yet to come out, some possibilities are David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method, Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse, and Alexander Payne’s The Descendants. There’s also been some talk of a film called The Artist.

For the male acting categories I could see a nomination for Daniel Craig in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I think that both Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen will be nominated for A Dangerous Method. Also George Clooney will most definitely be nominated for The Descendants. I can also see Leonardo DiCaprio getting a nomination for playing the title role in J. Edgar. Other possible contenders are Demián Bichir in A Better Life and Christopher Plummer in Beginners.

In the female acting categories we’ll see Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Meryl Streep in The Iron Lady, Emma Stone and Viola Davis in The Help, Jessica Chastain in The Tree of Life, Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk About Kevin, Keira Knightly in A Dangerous Method, and maybe Anne Hathaway for One Day.

For Best Director we’ll get people like David Fincher, David Cronenberg, Alexander Payne, Clint Eastwood, Steven Spielberg, and maybe Michel Hazanavicius for The Artist. I think Terrence Malick will just miss the cut though.
