Cedar Rapids Movie Review (DVD)

July 21, 2011

Cedar Rapids came out in limited release in February of 2011. I never got a chance to see it in theaters. It’s been out on DVD for a little while and I finally got around to seeing it.

Cedar Rapids stars Ed Helms (The HangoverThe Office) as Tim Lippe. Tim is your average everyday nice guy. He works for an insurance company and is one day sent to an insurance convention in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take on an important task to help his company win an award that means a lot to them. While there he meets some interesting people and gets himself involved in some wacky situations which change his outlook on life.

I was very pleased by this movie. The humor is all very well-written by screenwriter Phil Johnston. The dialogue was very funny throughout. It kept me entertained all the way through.  Everything in the movie seemed very natural and very realistic. And the characters are all very quirky and interesting in their own ways.

The rest of the casts include Ann Heche as the love interest and John C. Reilly and Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Tim’s roommates and new friends. Helms and Heche have good chemistry together. And Reilly is pretty funny as always.

While the film is quite, funny there are also some good dramatic moments and some nice touching moments. It’s all executed very well by director Miguel Arteta.

There’s not really much to complain about here. I think this is one of the better films that I’ve seen from 2011. I think it’s worth an hour and a half of your time.

I’m going to give Cedar Rapids and 8/10.
